Meta is betting big on AI with plans to drop hundreds of billions on new products and a massive data center almost the size of Manhattan.
Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta’s first multi-gigawatt data center, Prometheus, will go live in 2026. Another facility, Hyperion, could scale up to 5 gigawatts in the next few years.
“We’re building multiple more titan clusters as well. Just one of these covers a significant part of the footprint of Manhattan,” Zuckerberg said.
Meta aims to be the first to bring a gigawatt-plus AI supercluster online, according to industry report SemiAnalysis.
The company is backing the huge AI push with cash from its ad empire, which pulled in nearly $165 billion last year.
Meta shuffled its AI research into a new division called Superintelligence Labs after issues with Llama 4 and some staff quitting. This unit will roll out the Meta AI app, image-to-video tools, and smart glasses.
DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria says AI is already boosting Meta’s ad sales by helping sell more ads and at higher prices.
Zuckerberg has also been aggressively poaching AI talent. The Superintelligence Labs are now led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman. Meta’s recent $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI plays a role here.
Meta’s capital expenditure forecast for 2025 jumped to $64 billion–$72 billion in April. The company is racing to keep pace with OpenAI and Google.
