YouTube is cracking down on low-quality AI videos with a new monetization policy. Starting July 15, 2025, only content that’s “significantly original and authentic” can stay in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

The update targets mass-produced, spammy AI videos. Think text-to-video clips, recycled footage, automated voiceovers on stock images, and bulk uploads with little human input. Channels relying heavily on these will risk losing monetization.

Rene Ritchie, YouTube’s Head of Editorial & Creator Liaison, called it a “minor clarification” but made clear it’s about cutting through “AI slop” to prioritize real human creativity.

The move comes as generative AI tools flood YouTube with easily made content, from deepfake scams to viral AI-generated true crime. YouTube wants to protect the visibility of genuine, human-driven videos.

Not all AI content is banned. AI-assisted videos can still monetize if they’re unique and offer real value. The line is drawn at low-effort, repetitive, or stolen AI stuff.

Creators should rethink workflows that pump out automated content without strong human edits. The policy reinforces that monetizable content must showcase human creativity.

For filmmakers and serious creators, this is mostly a green light to keep using AI tools — like for B-roll or ideation — as long as the final work is original and clearly theirs.
