Wispr Flow has just launched a new iOS app that takes dictation to a new level. This app allows users to use their voice to type in any application, a feature that’s positioning the startup against major players like Meta, Google, and OpenAI.
The app supports over 100 languages and offers a keyboard feature that enhances the user experience. Users can dictate text in an array of apps, making it convenient for texting, emailing, and more. Initial impressions show significant promise, particularly in understanding diverse accents — a noted struggle for many users with existing tech giants’ voice recognition products.
Wispr Flow includes additional features like a numeric and symbol keyboard for special characters. It even allows whispering for discreet use. The company claims its tech can operate in areas with poor network coverage. Users can try it out for free, with a limit of 2,000 words per week, or opt for an unlimited plan at $12 per month.
Investors have backed the startup with $26 million, and the revenue is reportedly climbing by 60% year-on-year. Co-founder Tanay Kothari shared that Wispr Flow has a 19% conversion rate for subscription users. The company is also set to release an Android app soon.
Kothari initially envisioned a wearable device that could allow silent typing before pivoting to software. The desktop app’s hotkey function streamlines dictation, but the challenge remains convincing users to switch keyboards on iOS.
Wispr Flow faces competition from startups like Aqua, Talktastic, Superwhisper, and Betterdication. As the AI voice tech landscape evolves, Kothari believes Wispr Flow’s strong engineering will give it a competitive edge.
Stay tuned for further developments as the voice tech race heats up.
