Waymo is expanding its robotaxi service by 80 square miles across Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Silicon Valley.

The company now covers more than 250 square miles in California. New LA zones include Playa del Rey, Ladera Heights, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and Sunset Boulevard. Riders can travel from Mid-City to Inglewood and Westchester via La Cienega and La Brea.

In the Bay Area, service now extends to Brisbane, South SF, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, plus Palo Alto and Menlo Park in Silicon Valley.

This expansion comes just weeks after several Waymo robotaxis were burned and vandalized during immigration protests in Los Angeles. The fiery images caused Waymo to pull back service downtown and limit nationwide operations ahead of widespread protests.

Waymo spokesperson Chris Bonelli said the company is still limiting service in some LA areas but plans to ramp it up soon.

"The company continually evaluates and adjusts its operations based on traffic conditions, special events, and local guidance. We are still temporarily limiting the Waymo service in parts of Los Angeles, including downtown, and will monitor the evolving situation and ramp up service soon."

Waymo’s paid trips across San Francisco, LA, Phoenix, and Austin have increased five-fold since June 2024. It now runs over 250,000 paid trips per week.

Its commercial fleet includes 400+ vehicles in LA and over 600 in the Bay Area.
