Intel is reportedly in talks for a U.S. government stake to boost domestic chip manufacturing. Bloomberg reports the stake would support Intel’s stalled Ohio fab expansion.

The issue started after President Trump pushed for Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan to resign, citing vague conflicts of interest. This came soon after GOP Senator Tom Cotton questioned Tan’s ties to China.

Tan met with the Trump administration on August 11 to ease concerns and discuss cooperation. That meeting sparked talks of the government taking equity in Intel, Bloomberg says.

Intel declined to comment on the stake talks but stressed their commitment to U.S. tech leadership.

An Intel spokesperson stated:

“Intel is deeply committed to supporting President Trump’s efforts to strengthen U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership,”
“We look forward to continuing our work with the Trump Administration to advance these shared priorities, but we are not going to comment on rumors or speculation.”
