Waymo robotaxis launch on Uber in Atlanta

Waymo robotaxis can now be hailed in Atlanta through Uber. The rollout covers about 65 square miles, expanding the “Waymo on Uber” service that was first launched in Austin.

Uber and Waymo announced the service Tuesday. Uber already partners with 18 autonomous vehicle companies, with an annual run-rate of 1.5 million AV trips for mobility and delivery. Waymo provides 250,000 paid robotaxi rides weekly across Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

Adding Atlanta is expected to increase those numbers. Waymo says its Atlanta fleet is in the “dozens” and will grow alongside its Austin fleet to the hundreds.

The hybrid service mixes robotaxis with human-driven cars. Uber riders can choose preferences to boost chances of a Waymo match. Unlike other cities where Waymo One app is used to hail rides, Atlanta riders still book through Uber.

Once matched with a Waymo, riders decide to accept the robotaxi or switch to a human ride. The Uber app unlocks the car, opens the trunk, and starts the trip.

Pricing matches UberX and Uber Comfort rides with drivers.

Uber handles charging, maintenance, and cleaning. Waymo monitors the tech, roadside assistance, and some rider support.

The partnership began in September last year. Uber and Waymo planned robotaxi service for Austin and Atlanta in early 2025. Austin launched in March with over 100 robotaxis.

This rollout marks a big push for driverless rides in a major metro area via Uber’s network.
