UK Government’s Data Bill Facing Major Backlash from Creatives

The UK government’s proposed Data (Use and Access) Bill is under fire as artists and industry leaders protest outside Parliament, demanding stronger protections against AI-generated content taking their livelihoods.

A fierce debate spills back into the House of Lords on Monday, with little movement toward compromise. The issue? Balancing access for AI developers with the rights of creators.

"Don’t let AI steal our music," read protest signs from trade association UK Music. Baroness Beeban Kidron, a vocal opponent of unrestricted AI access, argues that the bill risks "state-sanctioned theft" from a £124bn industry.

The bill would allow AI companies to use copyrighted materials unless creators opt-out, a proposal met with resistance from nearly 300 House of Lords members. Instead, many say AI firms should disclose what materials they utilize for training. This has sparked a division between artists and technology advocates.

Sir Nick Clegg, former Meta executive, warns that requiring permissions from all content creators would "kill the AI industry in this country."

The clock ticks on this controversial bill. If it continues to get stuck in legislative "ping-pong," it could be shelved entirely, taking other key regulations down with it, including data rights for bereaved parents and more efficient sharing protocols for NHS patient data.

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle stated copyright law is "not fit for purpose" today, though he hasn’t publicly taken a stance on necessary changes.

As of now, the tension between tech and creativity shows no signs of easing. Major artists, including Sir Elton John and Dua Lipa, have cited this debate as vital for the future of creative work in the age of AI.

Industry stakeholders are watching as the battle for the future of creative rights and AI development continues.
