The Boring Company is testing Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system inside its Las Vegas tunnels. The tests have been running for months in Tesla vehicles, but safety drivers remain behind the wheel.

Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, spoke to Fortune. He confirmed the ongoing testing but warned a broader rollout is “a ways off.”

The tunnels, open for about four years, connect the Las Vegas Convention Center to nearby hotels. They cover a small area, with plans to eventually expand.

The system isn’t fully hands-off. Hill said drivers still have to “periodically” take control during the tests. That contrasts with Elon Musk’s public boasts about Tesla’s self-driving tech.

The tunnels’ simple layout theoretically suits Tesla’s autopilot tech. But unique challenges persist, like picking up and dropping off passengers underground.

Hill described how the bright tunnel lights and rocky walls have caused issues for the system. Cars sometimes “find spots that are difficult for them.”

“Safety drivers still have to periodically intervene and take control of the vehicles.”

The trial provides a rare real-world test case for Tesla’s FSD in a controlled environment. The Boring Company’s tunnels remain a small but significant proving ground for autonomous tech.
