Tesla’s Optimus robot production is way behind schedule — just hundreds built so far in 2025, nowhere near the 5,000 goal. Sources told The Information Tesla is missing its ambitious target with eight months left in the year. The company either needs to speed up or push back deadlines.

Tesla’s Q2 revenue took a 12% hit, hitting sales across EVs, solar, and energy storage. Elon Musk said during the earnings call that production of the new Optimus 3 model will start early next year.

Musk remains bullish on scaling quickly. He said:

“We will scale Optimus production as fast as possible and try to get to a million units a year as quickly as possible,”
“We think we can get there in less than five years. That’s a reasonable aspiration.”

Musk’s past timeline bets haven’t panned out. He promised a million Tesla robotaxis on the road by 2020 and mass production by 2024. Neither happened.

Tesla needs a push to hit its bot milestones—or face another delay.
