NHTSA is speeding up the exemption process for self-driving cars without steering wheels or pedals.

The agency says the current Part 555 exemption process is too slow and complicated for automated driving systems. Car makers still have to prove these vehicles are as safe as regular ones and that exemptions serve the public interest.

This move aims to cut red tape and accelerate deployment of cars built with no traditional driver controls.

A little bird

LoveFrom, Jony Ive’s design firm, worked with Rivian on a secret micromobility project called Inder. Rivian filed but then dropped a trademark for Inder.

JetZero, a zero-emissions jet startup, plans a $4.7 billion factory in Greensboro, NC. The plant, backed by investors like United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, aims to start construction in early 2026 and deliver jets in the early 2030s.

The deal includes $1.1 billion in state incentives over 40 years, tied to creating more than 14,000 jobs from 2027-2036.

Mitra Chem, a battery materials startup, raised $15.6 million toward a $50 million round.


Autonomous vehicles

Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft — but riders still pay, according to app Obi’s pricing analysis.
