Waymo limits robotaxi rides for protests, then expands — now eyes New York City

Waymo paused its robotaxi service nationwide on June 13 ahead of “No Kings” protests against Donald Trump. The move cut paid rides from the country’s largest commercial robotaxi operator, which handles 250,000 rides weekly.

Soon after, Waymo announced an 80-square-mile service expansion across Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, and Silicon Valley.

Now, the company is applying to test autonomous vehicles in New York City. Don’t expect driverless testing yet—state law changes are required for fully driverless rides. Lobbying efforts are expected to heat up.
