Pope Leo XIV pushes for strict AI ethics at the UN’s AI for Good Summit in Geneva.
The message, signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, urges nations to set up clear AI regulations to protect human dignity. The summit runs July 8-11, hosted by the UN’s International Telecommunication Union and Switzerland, gathering governments, academics, and tech leaders.
The Pope flagged AI’s growing ability to make autonomous choices and called for ethical frameworks that go beyond just efficiency.
Pope Leo XIV stressed the responsibility of developers and users alike, demanding AI governance centered on human values.
He also highlighted AI’s impact on society and morality, warning it can’t replace genuine human judgment.
Pope Leo wants AI to build peaceful, just societies and promote integral human development.
Pope Leo XIV said:
“I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to seek ethical clarity and to establish a coordinated local and global governance of AI, based on the shared recognition of the inherent dignity and fundamental freedoms of the human person”
He added:
“As AI becomes capable of adapting autonomously to many situations by making purely technical algorithmic choices, it is crucial to consider its anthropological and ethical implications, the values at stake and the duties and regulatory frameworks required to uphold those values”
On ethical responsibility:
“The responsibility for the ethical use of AI systems begins with those who develop, manage and oversee them” but users also need to share this mission
Pope Leo’s call comes amid growing debates on AI oversight worldwide as tech reshapes education, healthcare, governance, and more.
The full message underscores AI must serve humanity’s common good, not just technical progress.
