Perplexity just launched Comet, a new Chromium-based browser built for generative AI. It runs on the same open-source Chromium code that powers Google Chrome — a subtle jab back at Google’s browser dominance since 2008.
Right now, Comet is exclusive. You can only download it on macOS and Windows if you’re a subscriber to Perplexity’s newest $200/month tier, Perplexity Max, which launched on July 2, 2025. Annual subscriptions run $2,000.
If you’re rocking a free or cheaper Perplexity plan, you’re stuck on the waitlist. Some Pro users ($20/month) have waited two months with no invite. Official word:
“We will always provide a free version of Perplexity for all users, and that will include Comet,” reads a section under Comet’s FAQ.
Exactly when Perplexity plans to open up Comet to Pro and Free users is a mystery, though.
More platforms are planned but no dates or specifics on broader rollout yet.
If you want Comet now, $200 a month or a pricey yearly subscription is your ticket. Otherwise, sign up for the waitlist and cross your fingers.
Comet aims to compete in the browser showdown by baking AI in from the ground up. The question: can it lure users away from Chrome’s entrenched base? For now, Comet is tightly locked behind a premium paywall.
