OpenAI just locked in a massive deal with Oracle to supercharge its Stargate AI data centres in the US. These new centres will pack hardware that draws 4.5 gigawatts of power—enough to light a major city—all dedicated to next-gen AI.
Add this expansion to ongoing work in Abilene, Texas, and OpenAI is pushing over 5 gigawatts total. That’s enough juice to run more than two million top-tier AI chips.
This buildout is part of OpenAI’s promise to spend half a trillion dollars on US AI infrastructure. With Oracle and Japan’s SoftBank joining, they’re on track to exceed that goal. Microsoft stays on board as the main cloud partner, handling the networking.
OpenAI says these Stargate centres will create over 100,000 jobs—from construction crews to server technicians. The first Nvidia GB200 chips have landed in Abilene, powering new AI model tests.
Behind the scenes, this huge industrial effort combines cutting-edge tech and massive energy use, shaping the foundation for the AI era.
