Netflix used generative AI to create a scene in its sci-fi series The Eternaut. This marks the first time the streamer has applied AI for an original show or movie.

The AI-generated sequence involved a building collapsing in Buenos Aires. It finished 10 times faster than traditional visual effects, according to co-CEO Ted Sarandos. The cost was also far lower—something not possible with a typical budget.

Sarandos said the tech isn’t just about saving money. It’s about helping creators make better films and shows.

Ted Sarandos stated:

“That VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with traditional VFX tools and workflows.”

“Also, the cost of it just wouldn’t have been feasible for a show in that budget.”

“We remain convinced that AI represents an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper.”

This announcement comes after Netflix rolled out new AI features in May. The streamer launched a mobile search tool that lets users find content by typing conversational phrases like “something funny and upbeat.” Netflix also plans to use AI to blend ads into shows, including placing products in a Stranger Things-style background.
