Microsoft launched its first Southeast Asia research lab in Singapore, aiming to boost AI research, industry solutions, and talent. The new Microsoft Research Asia – Singapore lab is backed by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

The lab will focus on AI breakthroughs, responsible applications, and support Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0. It joins Microsoft’s global research network to push AI in healthcare, finance, logistics, and smart environments.

Jermaine Loy from EDB added:

“The establishment of Microsoft Research Asia’s first lab in Southeast Asia reflects our commitment to partner leading tech players to deliver real-world impact through AI, from Singapore.”
“Importantly, the new lab will create new opportunities for researchers and companies in areas such as healthcare and finance.”

The lab is already working with local partners like SingHealth, NUS, NTU Singapore, and SMU. Projects include personalized healthcare AI, spatial intelligence with embodied AI, and adapting AI for Southeast Asian cultural norms.

Talent development is a major focus, with ties to NUS PhD programs and industry postgraduate schemes supported by EDB. The lab also runs academic exchanges, summer schools, and joint workshops with Singapore’s top universities.

Since its founding in 1998, Microsoft Research Asia has expanded its reach, and this Singapore lab marks a key step into Southeast Asia’s booming tech scene.
