Microsoft is testing a new experimental Copilot Mode in its Edge browser starting today. The AI-powered feature lets Copilot search across all your open tabs. It can handle tasks like booking a restaurant and puts the Copilot chatbot right on your new tab page.
The Copilot Mode sits between Google’s limited Gemini test in Chrome and Comet’s full AI browser overhaul. It can scan multiple tabs, helping you compare hotels or summarize product options across tabs.
Voice navigation is also part of Copilot in Edge. You can ask it to find info on a webpage or open tabs with products to compare. Microsoft plans to let Copilot access your Edge history and credentials—with your permission—to book reservations for you.
These tools build on Microsoft’s existing AI assistant in Edge and Copilot Vision work. Sean Lyndersay, VP of Product for Microsoft Edge, says:
“Copilot will soon be able to guide you in your tasks and organize your browsing — past and present — into helpful, topic-based journeys.”
Copilot Mode is optional. You can toggle it on or off anytime in Edge’s settings.
“With Copilot Mode, you can also choose to turn the experience on and off as you wish through your Edge settings,“ Lyndersay adds. ”If you choose not to turn on Copilot Mode, you can continue to browse on Edge as usual.“
Microsoft calls Copilot Mode “experimental” and says it will evolve. It’s free for a limited time but has usage limits on some features. That hints at a potential future subscription for full access.
