Google Cloud just launched Dataplex Universal Catalog, a single platform for metadata management that promises smoother AI data governance.
The new tool tackles a messy problem: making data easy to find, understand, trust, and use at massive scale. Metadata has been around for decades but now powers the AI era’s biggest challenge—linking petabytes of data with thousands of autonomous agents and workflows.
Dataplex Universal Catalog combines cataloging, governance, quality checks, and metadata intelligence in one cloud-native system. It automatically discovers and classifies data from BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and more. Its serverless profiling engine spots issues early, avoiding downstream errors. 
The platform uses logical domains to organize data by teams or products. Governance policies cascade automatically to keep sensitive info safe—even across projects or clouds. Open formats like Apache Iceberg mean tables stay versioned and compatible for hybrid and multi-cloud setups.
