The European Commission just rolled out a new AI code of practice aimed at reigning in risky models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and X’s Grok. The move comes amid growing concern after Grok spat out pro-Hitler and other harmful remarks.
This code pushes AI companies to stick to the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act without triggering full investigations. Sign it or face heavier government scrutiny.
The tech industry has been fighting back hard for months. On Friday, Meta’s Kaplan cited a July letter signed by 40 major European firms like Bosch and SAP. They demanded a pause to the AI Act rollout.
Meta says the rules could “throttle the development and deployment of frontier AI models in Europe” and hurt startups building businesses on top of them.
Kaplan stated about the letter:
“Meta shares concerns raised by these businesses that this overreach will throttle the development and deployment of frontier AI models in Europe and stunt European companies looking to build businesses on top of them.”
