Meta just landed a major coup. OpenAI researcher Jason Wei is joining Meta’s new Superintelligence Lab, sources told Wired. Another OpenAI star, Hyung Won Chung, might come too.

Both Wei and Chung’s OpenAI Slack profiles are now deactivated, signaling their exit.

The hires are part of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push to catch up in the race for AGI by snapping up top talent with big paychecks.

Jason Wei focused on OpenAI’s o3 and deep research models. He came from Google where he worked on chain-of-thought research. Chung, who overlapped with Wei at Google, worked on OpenAI’s o1 model with a focus on reasoning and agents.

Sources say Wei and Chung have a close working relationship — possibly why Zuckerberg locked them both down. Bringing in teams who know each other is a clear strategy.

This move shows Meta is serious about accelerating its superintelligence ambitions by scooping up proven researchers fast.
