Apple is losing its top AI models exec to Meta. Ruoming Pang, who led Apple’s team building their in-house AI foundation models, is jumping ship. Bloomberg reports he’ll join Meta’s new AI superintelligence unit.
Pang’s departure hits as Apple’s AI efforts lag behind rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and even Meta. Apple’s own AI models are seen as weaker, pushing the company to consider using third-party models for the next Siri upgrade.
Sources tell Bloomberg this could be just the first of several exits from Apple’s struggling AI group. 
At Meta, Pang’s skill in creating small, on-device AI models could be a big win. This hire joins others Zuckerberg has made recently, including leaders from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence.
