Lucid Air Owners To Access Tesla Superchargers With A Condition

Lucid Air owners can charge at Tesla Superchargers across North America starting July 31. But there’s a catch: charging speeds max out at 50 kW, far below Tesla’s 250 kW peak.

The longstanding deal between Lucid and Tesla finally kicks in with an approved adapter priced at $220. This adapter works with Tesla V3 Supercharger stations and above.

The speed limit comes from Lucid’s 924-volt battery system clashing with Tesla’s 400-volt chargers. EVs with 800-volt-plus systems like Lucid’s generally can’t tap full power at Tesla stations.

Lucid spokesperson Andrew Hussey shared the company repurposed the Air’s integrated charger hardware, called Wunderbox, to enable 50 kW boost charging at Superchargers.

"Engineers repurposed hardware in the Air’s integrated charging system, called Wunderbox, to make the system work and activate 50kW boost charging when using a Supercharger. He added that Lucid views the 50kW charging for Air as another option for owners who are on road trips, or live or work closer to Superchargers."

Unlike the new Lucid Gravity SUV, which has a built-in Tesla-compatible port, the Air sticks with the Combined Charging System (CCS) that was once North America’s standard. Tesla’s unique North America Charging Standard (NACS) is winning over automakers fast.

Ford paved the way in May 2023 with its own agreement to bring its EVs onto Tesla’s network via adapters. Other big names like GM, Rivian, Honda, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota are following suit with future models adopting NACS ports.

Lucid was late to the party. The next Lucid EV, the Gravity SUV, will have native NACS compatibility.

This rollout gives Lucid Air owners more charging options, but don’t expect Tesla-level speeds on the Superchargers anytime soon.
