AI-powered job interviews are hitting candidates with detailed, instant evaluations—and it’s unsettling.
Radhika Sharma, a 35-year-old product manager from New Delhi, tested one such system after applying to a SaaS company. The invite was clear: an AI-driven screening would quiz her on product management skills.
The interview kicked off with strict rules: no distractions, share your screen, no tab switching. A female AI voice fired rapid questions on topics like roadmap planning and handling stakeholder conflicts. A countdown clock ticked down 20 minutes, making the experience tense.
The AI then delivered a surprise: a detailed report ranking her technical skills, engagement, eye contact, facial expressions, posture, and even attire.
Radhika noted,
"My evaluation felt extremely accurate, but I underestimated what the AI was capable of scoring me on, so I didn’t think to wear a collared shirt."
She scored high technically but lost points on professional dress and occasional eye contact.
The instant feedback was a plus compared to human interviews where feedback rarely reaches candidates. But the AI didn’t let her ask clarifying questions, limiting interaction.
