Intel is gearing up for big layoffs in its Foundry division starting July. The chip giant plans to cut 15% to 20% of its Intel Foundry workforce. This division handles design, manufacturing, and packaging of semiconductors for outside clients.
The exact number of employees affected isn’t clear. Intel’s total headcount hit 108,900 by December 2024, per its latest SEC filing.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took charge in March, has flagged the need to refocus on core businesses and streamline the company. Rumors about these cuts started swirling in April. Tan also signaled plans to spin off noncore units during Intel Vision in March.
Last August, Intel slashed 15% of its staff, roughly 15,000 jobs.
TechCrunch has reached out to Intel for comment.
Lip-Bu Tan stated at Intel Vision in March:
“The company needs to refocus, flatten its organization structure, and return to being an engineering-first company.”
Intel’s latest layoff round signals more trimming down after last year’s big cut. Foundry workers are in the crosshairs next.
