OpenAI is updating GPT-5 to be “warmer and friendlier” after a rocky launch.
The issue started soon after OpenAI rolled out GPT-5. CEO Sam Altman admitted the launch was “a little more bumpy than we’d hoped for.” Some users preferred the older GPT-4o model and complained about GPT-5’s colder tone.
Now, OpenAI is responding with a subtle update meant to make GPT-5 feel more approachable. The company says the model will add small phrases like “Good question” or “Great start,” but won’t ramp up flattery.
OpenAI shared the update on X:
“You’ll notice small, genuine touches like ‘Good question’ or ‘Great start,’ not flattery.”
“Internal tests show no rise in sycophancy compared to the previous GPT-5 personality.“
OpenAI’s VP, Nick Turley, told journalists at a recent dinner that prior GPT-5 responses were “just very to the point.” This update aims to soften that.
The launch follows OpenAI’s attempt to shift focus to longer-term plans, but the GPT-5 backlash remains front and center. The company is clearly monitoring reactions and trying to adjust fast.
