Google is opening up its AI note-taking app to younger users. NotebookLM was previously limited to those 18 and up. Now, Google has dropped the age limit for Google Workspace for Education users of any age and consumers 13+.
The move lets younger students use the app to study smarter. Features include turning notes into podcast-like Audio Overviews and creating interactive Mind Maps. NotebookLM also just added Video Overviews to transform notes, PDFs, and images into visual presentations.
This comes amid growing worries about AI in education—especially on data privacy and misuse risks. Google says it has tougher content rules for under-18 users. It also promises that chats and uploads aren’t reviewed by humans or used to train AI models.
The update follows OpenAI’s new ChatGPT study mode, signaling a ramp-up in AI tools for education.
Google stressed the change in its official blog announcement.
NotebookLM is available to Google Workspace for Education users of any age and for consumers ages 13 and up.
NotebookLM enforces stricter content policies for users under 18 to prevent inappropriate responses, and user chats and uploads are not reviewed by humans or used for AI training.
