Google just launched a new feature called Guided Learning inside Gemini. It’s an AI tutor designed to help users learn deeply, not just spit out answers.
The launch follows OpenAI’s Study Mode for ChatGPT, which also aims to boost critical thinking over quick answers.
Both moves come amid ongoing concerns that AI chatbots hurt learning by handing out direct answers. Google and OpenAI seem to be repositioning their bots as study partners, not just answer machines.
Guided Learning breaks down problems step-by-step. It adapts explanations for each user and uses images, videos, diagrams, and interactive quizzes to build and test knowledge.
Google says the feature reveals the “why” and “how” behind concepts.
Google’s VP of Learning & Sustainability, Maureen Heymans, wrote:
“Whether you’re preparing for an exam about enzymes, starting the first draft of a paper on the importance of bee populations in supporting our food systems, or exploring your passion for photography, Guided Learning is a collaborative thinking partner that helps you get it — each step of the way,”
Gemini will now also add relevant images, diagrams, and YouTube videos directly in answers. Users can ask it to create flashcards and study guides from quiz results or class materials.
Google is offering a free one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan for students in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil. The plan grants expanded access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, Deep Research, and more.
The new feature arrives just as schools gear up for the new year, aiming to make AI tools part of learning — not quick fixes.
