Scale AI is losing big customers after Meta’s huge investment.

Google planned to pay Scale $200 million this year but is now talking with competitors and plans to cut ties, Reuters reports. Microsoft is also pulling back. OpenAI reportedly dropped Scale months ago, though its CFO says the company will still work with Scale among other vendors.

Scale serves self-driving car companies and the U.S. government, but its main customers are generative AI firms needing expert annotators to train models.

Scale declined to comment on Google specifically but told TechCrunch its business remains strong and it will stay independent, protecting customer data.

Meta reportedly dropped $14.3 billion for a 49% stake in Scale. CEO Alexandr Wang left Scale to join Meta, leading their push for “superintelligence.”

"Scale’s business remains strong, and that it will continue to operate as an independent company that safeguards its customers’ data."
