GitHub Copilot hit 20 million users, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced on the company’s latest earnings call. A GitHub spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch this counts all-time users.

That’s 5 million new users in the last three months alone. GitHub Copilot had 15 million users in April. Microsoft and GitHub haven’t shared how many stick around daily or monthly—those numbers are probably much smaller.

Copilot is a powerhouse in enterprise, used by 90% of the Fortune 100. Its enterprise user base jumped 75% since last quarter, according to Microsoft.

Nadella said in 2024, Copilot out-earned the entire GitHub platform at Microsoft’s 2018 acquisition. The tool’s growth keeps climbing.

AI coding tools still lag behind giants like ChatGPT in raw users, but software devs and companies are paying top dollar. GitHub and Microsoft have the enterprise network to dominate this niche.

Cursor, a rival coding AI, claims over 1 million daily users as of March and has grown ARR from $200 million to $500 million, Bloomberg reported. Both GitHub and Cursor are now building AI agents that review and debug code and automate workflows.

Nadella said GitHub’s AI coding agents are gaining big momentum.

The AI coding space is buzzing. Google has entered with Windsurf team hires. Cognition with Devin grabbed Windsurf’s rest. OpenAI and Anthropic push their own models, Codex and Claude Code, vying for control.

It’s heating up fast.

GitHub spokesperson stated to TechCrunch:

“The 20 million number represents all-time users.”

Nadella shared on the earnings call:

“GitHub Copilot was a larger business than all of GitHub was when Microsoft acquired it in 2018.”
