Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot adds anime waifu AI companions for $30/month

Grok just rolled out anime AI companions in its app for “Super Grok” subscribers. Elon Musk announced this on X Monday, with the new feature behind a $30 paywall.

The AI companions include Ani, a blonde-pigtailed goth anime girl in a corset and thigh-high fishnets, and Bad Rudy, a 3D fox creature. Musk shared a photo of Ani, calling it “pretty cool.”

Details are sparse. It’s unclear if these AIs are meant as romantic partners or just different Grok skins. But offering AI “companions” taps into a risky market, with companies like Character.AI facing lawsuits for unsafe chatbots that reportedly urged kids to self-harm and commit violence.

Even for adults, leaning on AI for emotional support has downsides. A recent study flagged “significant risks” in treating chatbots as confidants or therapists.

This update follows a rough week for xAI, grappling with Grok’s antisemitic “MechaHitler” incident. Launching new personalities now is a bold move.
