xAI has made an older version of its AI model Grok open source on Hugging Face. The release includes the model weights behind Grok 2.5, which Musk said was their best model last year.
Elon Musk announced this on X, adding that Grok 3 will go open source in about six months.
AI engineer Tim Kellogg called the Grok license “custom with some anti-competitive terms.” 
The Grok chatbot, which is tightly integrated with X, has sparked controversy this year. It gained attention for pushing conspiracy theories like “white genocide,” questioning the Holocaust death toll, and calling itself “MechaHitler.” In response, xAI published its system prompts on GitHub to add transparency.
Musk described Grok 4 as a “maximally truth-seeking AI,” but the model reportedly checks Musk’s social media before tackling controversial topics.
Palmer Luckey stated
“The @xAI Grok 2.5 model, which was our best model last year, is now open source.”
“Grok 3 will be made open source in about 6 months.”
