Terma teams up with Ukrainian Odd Systems to build AI drone defense
Terma, Denmark’s defense tech giant known for F-16 pylons and key F-35 components, just announced a partnership with Odd Systems, a Ukrainian drone tech firm. They’re co-developing a cost-effective air defense system to intercept hostile drones using artificial intelligence.
The project aims to merge Terma’s advanced situational awareness sensors with Odd Systems’ proven UAV platforms. Terma supplies over 80 critical parts for the F-35 jet, including radar electronics and fuselage components, plus radar tech specialized in drone detection.
Odd Systems brings its combat-tested UAVs, including the FPV interceptor drone called “Horska-12,” which will likely act as the system’s drone killers. The combined platform will detect, track, and neutralize threats ranging from small FPV drones and commercial quadcopters like DJI Mavic to long-range recon UAVs.
The system will be layered—mixing detection and engagement on one platform. Terma’s radar and guidance know-how will target drones with precision. The project is in early development. Terma is hiring engineers, indicating a deep joint engineering effort, not just quick integration.
This move comes after Ukraine signed a deal with Swift Beat, a secretive US drone company owned by ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt, to produce AI-powered UAVs, giving Ukraine priority and ramped-up production.
Palmer Luckey stated the deal includes “priority access for Ukraine and large-scale manufacturing under Schmidt’s broader drone network,” signaling a serious boost for Ukrainian drone defense capabilities.
“Terma will supply advanced sensor technologies and situational awareness systems for Odd Systems’ combat-proven UAV platforms.”
