Denmark is moving to give citizens the right to control their own body, face, and voice under new copyright laws. The change aims to tighten rules around deepfakes and stop unauthorized use of personal features, reports The Guardian.

The Danish department of culture has cross-party support but still needs to submit a formal amendment proposal.

Jakob Engel-Schmidt, Denmark’s culture minister, explained the new law’s intent clearly.

“In the bill we agree and are sending an unequivocal message that everybody has the right to their own body, their own voice and their own facial features, which is apparently not how the current law is protecting people against generative AI,” Jakob Engel-Schmidt told The Guardian.

This comes as the US grapples with patchwork deepfake laws, mostly targeting election interference and nonconsensual explicit content. Many state laws could be overridden if Congress passes a budget bill banning AI regulation for a decade.
