BBC News ropes in Meta exec to lead AI push

Anjali Kapoor is leaving Meta to head AI, Innovation and Growth at BBC News. Kapoor was Meta’s Director for Media Partnerships in Asia-Pacific and will now drive AI adoption and audience growth at the BBC.

She takes on this new director role as the BBC tightens editorial rules on generative AI and just days after BBC Studios launched an AI lab.

Kapoor has media roots at The Globe and Mail, Yahoo!, Bloomberg Media, then Meta, where she boosted revenue and audience for news outlets.

BBC News CEO Deborah Turness hailed Kapoor’s role as “critical” to the future of BBC journalism and hitting younger viewers.

Deborah Turness stated:

“Anjali’s deep knowledge of how news works, her future-focused approach to AI and her deep understanding of product and platforms make her uniquely positioned to lead this work.”

Kapoor herself said she’ll “ruthlessly focus [her] time to drive audience growth both on and off-platform, accelerate AI adoption and make [the BBC] a more data-led organisation.”

BBC is clearly betting big on AI to reshape its news output and grab the next generation’s attention.
