Google is teaming up with Taiwan’s government to fight type 2 diabetes using AI. The project targets 1.3 million patients now, aiming for over two million by 2026.
Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) launched the AI-on-DM program using Google Cloud and Gemini AI tools. It analyzes 20 years of health data to personalize diabetes treatment.
The system sorts patients by condition severity and plugs into Taiwan’s Universal Family Physician Program 2.0. This helps tailor care plans based on individual risk.
Second part: an AI assistant inside the Taiwan My Health Bank app will guide users with personalized advice and trusted diabetes info.
Type 2 diabetes hits one in 10 Taiwanese, driving huge healthcare costs. The AI push supports Taiwan’s move toward value-based care, focusing spending on better outcomes and prevention.
NHIA Director General Shih Chung-liang said:
"AI has the power to transform healthcare in Taiwan by making it more personalised to individual needs."
"We believe we are the first country to integrate AI into government-supported preventative healthcare initiatives at a national scale."
Google’s AI integration is setting a new standard for government healthcare systems globally.
