Apple just launched Live Translation for Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls. The feature works in real time, translating conversations as they happen.

Leslie Ikemoto, Apple’s director of input experience, explained the system at WWDC 2025. It uses Apple-built models that run fully on device, keeping your chats private.

In Messages, Live Translation auto-translates texts as you type and instantly translates replies into your preferred language.

FaceTime adds live caption translation during calls. Phone calls get a full live translation makeover, too. Your words are translated and spoken out loud to the other caller, even if they’re not on Apple gear. Their replies come back to you spoken in your language.

Developers get a new API to add live translation to their communication apps.

Apple has not yet revealed how many languages will be supported.

Leslie Ikemoto stated:

“Live translation can translate conversation on the fly,” Leslie Ikemoto, Apple’s director of input experience, said Monday during the WWDC 2025 event. The translation feature is “enabled by Apple Built models that run entirely on your device so your personal conversations stay personal.”
