Apple rolled out key AI features with iOS 26 but pushed back on promised Siri upgrades.
The issue started at WWDC Monday when Apple’s Craig Federighi said AI-enhanced Siri features “need more time to reach our high quality bar.” More updates on these will come “in the coming year.” This likely delays the personalized Siri, which could work inside other apps, possibly until 2026. Morgan Stanley flagged this delay as a risk to iPhone sales.
For now, Apple launched the Foundation Models Framework SDK, letting developers build apps that tap into Apple Intelligence’s large language models. Federighi called this a spark for “a whole new wave of intelligent experiences.”
iOS 26 lands this fall, ditching the old numbering for a fresh start. Highlights include AI-powered live translation with more languages, new Genmoji features linked to ChatGPT, and a major new look dubbed “liquid glass.” Other changes: a new Games app, revamped CarPlay, and a Photos app overhaul bringing back separate camera roll and albums tabs. Apple also pushed its Apple TV+ slate, including new seasons of “The Morning Show” and “Slow Horses,” plus the new series “Chief of War.”
The lack of AI Siri updates stands out as Apple tries to catch up with rivals. ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s recent move to acquire io, Jony Ive’s AI startup, signals heated competition.
Shares slipped 1% Monday to just over $201, with Apple down about 20% this year.
Craig Federighi stated:
“We think this will ignite a whole new wave of intelligent experiences in the apps you use every day.”
