AWS expands cloud muscle in Australia with new AI service and government deal

AWS just boosted its Australian presence again. The cloud giant rolled out Amazon Bedrock, its fully managed generative AI service, in the AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region this April.

That’s a rapid follow-up to launching the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region and Australia’s first AWS Local Zones in Perth in 2023.

The big news came in July 2024. The Australian Government announced a partnership with AWS to build a "Top Secret" AWS Cloud. This cloud will power innovation in national security, defense, and intelligence.

Australia’s defense and intelligence agencies will use the cloud to improve their capabilities.

AWS has been in Australia since 2012 with the Sydney region. This latest expansion shows deeper investment and tighter government ties.

No comments from AWS or the Australian Government beyond the official announcement.

The AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region is now also a hub for generative AI workloads with Amazon Bedrock, expanding cloud options for Australian enterprises and government alike.

This could accelerate AWS adoption across highly sensitive sectors in Australia. Stay tuned.
