Amazon’s Ring is rolling out AI-generated alerts to summarize suspicious activity caught on its doorbells and cameras. The new feature launches in beta Wednesday for Ring premium users in the U.S. and Canada.

Instead of raw video clips or lengthy reports, the AI sends short text summaries describing the main motion trigger. Ring says these alerts are “intentionally concise” for quick, clear notifications.

Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff announced this as part of a bigger push into AI. Siminoff, who founded Ring in 2011 and returned to lead it again in April, said:

"We are just starting to scratch the surface of AI."

Amazon bought Ring in 2018 for about $1 billion, expanding its home security reach. Ring started with video doorbells but now sells cameras, floodlights, alarms, and even flying security drones.

The launch comes amid ongoing privacy concerns. Ring’s partnerships with hundreds of U.S. police departments have drawn criticism from privacy advocates, who warn the system can fuel racial profiling and misuse of footage. In 2024, Ring removed a controversial police request feature that let officers directly ask users for video clips.

The rollout also lands in a shaky AI landscape. Apple scrapped a news-summary AI feature in January after errors, and Google paused its Gemini AI image generator due to historical inaccuracies.

Ring seems to be doubling down despite risks.

Siminoff added:

"I see unlimited potential for new experiences we can invent for our neighbors."
