Amazon is set to invest $10 billion in new data centers in North Carolina, expanding its AI infrastructure. This move is part of a broader strategy, with Amazon allocating up to $100 billion this year on capital expenditures, primarily targeting AI-related projects.
The competition is fierce. Amazon is racing against giants like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI to boost its capabilities for AI tasks. CEO Andy Jassy emphasized that generative AI represents a "once-in-a-lifetime type of business opportunity."
Approximately 500 jobs are expected to be created in North Carolina as a direct result of this investment.
"Generative AI is driving increased demand for advanced cloud infrastructure and compute power, and our investment will support the future of AI from AWS data centers in the Tar Heel State," the company stated in a blog post.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced plans to spend at least $11 billion in Georgia for additional data center development aimed at supporting AI demand.
In the past year, Amazon has rolled out numerous generative AI products, including its own language models and a marketplace for third-party models called Bedrock. The company has also invested $8 billion in AI startup Anthropic, known for its Claude chatbot.
More updates to come as the AI race heats up.
