LG Innotek is partnering with Aeva Technologies to produce cutting-edge 4D LiDAR sensors for cars.

LG Innotek, part of South Korea’s LG Group, will manufacture and supply Aeva’s Atlas Ultra LiDAR tech. This deal targets top 10 global passenger vehicle makers first, before branching into consumer electronics, robotics, and industrial automation. LG Innotek is also investing up to $50 million for about 6% equity in Aeva.

Aeva CEO Soroush Salehian told TechCrunch:

“The first part of the partnership is focused on the automotive sector.”

“LG Innotek will act as our manufacturing partner for some of the top 10 global passenger vehicle OEMs.”

Aeva started in 2017 and has spent nearly $500 million on this “4D LiDAR on a chip.” Unlike usual LiDAR, which uses time-of-flight to measure distance, Aeva’s system uses Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave tech to read distance and velocity per pixel in real time.

Salehian compares it to color versus black-and-white cameras:

“It’s like going from black-and-white to color camera. We get this velocity information as a new dimension.”

The whole LiDAR setup is packed on a silicon photonics chip. That means it’s smaller, easier to make, and better for scaling across various markets.

Aeva plans to use the LG Innotek investment for product upgrades and team growth. Salehian says next stop is a single monolithic chip.

The company is also working with Nikon in Japan and CKG in Germany and expanding into smart infrastructure and airport monitoring, including at SFO and JFK Terminal One.

No fluff, just manufacturing muscle and next-gen sensing tech locked in motion.
