Meta is launching a super PAC to back California candidates who want lighter AI rules, Politico reports. The new group is called Mobilizing Economic Transformation Across California. Meta plans to dump tens of millions into it.
Brian Rice, Meta’s VP of public policy and the PAC’s head, warned that California’s current AI regulations “could stifle innovation, block AI progress, and put California’s technology leadership at risk.”
Brian Rice stated:
“Sacramento’s regulatory environment could stifle innovation, block AI progress, and put California’s technology leadership at risk.”
Meta’s lobbying has already fought California’s push for tighter AI controls. Earlier this year, the company opposed state senator Scott Wiener’s SB-53 bill. That law would force AI companies to share safety plans and report incidents. Last year, Meta played a role in killing the Kids Online Safety Act, which many expected to pass.
Meta isn’t new to political spending in California either. The company has backed various down-ballot candidates from both parties. This new PAC signals Meta’s intent to influence bigger races, including the 2026 governor’s race.
The launch comes as Silicon Valley players like Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI’s Greg Brockman commit over $100 million to a pro-AI super PAC.
