IBM and AMD are teaming up to build the next wave of computing. They’re working on a hybrid architecture that combines IBM’s quantum systems with AMD’s AI-focused chips.

The goal: a scalable, open-source quantum computing platform. This would give researchers in drug discovery, materials science, and logistics broader access to powerful new tools.

IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna shared the plan recently:

Quantum computing will simulate the natural world and represent information in an entirely new way.
By exploring how quantum computers from IBM and the advanced high-performance compute technologies of AMD can work together, we will build a powerful hybrid model that pushes past the limits of traditional computing.

This partnership targets commercial quantum computing that can solve real-world problems. It also marks a push by both companies to catch up after falling behind in the generative AI race.

No launch date announced yet, but expect more updates as this quantum-AI mashup takes shape.
