Waymo just got the green light to test its autonomous vehicles in New York City. This is the city’s first-ever permit for self-driving car trials. Waymo told TechCrunch it plans to start “immediately.”
The permit allows up to eight Jaguar I-Pace SUVs to run in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn through late September. Each vehicle must have a trained safety operator with one hand on the wheel at all times. No passenger pickups allowed—Waymo needs a Taxi and Limousine Commission license for that. The company also has to regularly report data and meet with the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT).
This move edges Waymo closer to launching a robotaxi service in one of the toughest markets. Waymo already runs in San Francisco, Austin, Phoenix, and Los Angeles—all warmer cities. Only San Francisco compares to NYC’s complexity.
Waymo started mapping NYC with Chrysler Pacifica minivans in 2021. The permit wasn’t guaranteed; after applying in June, Waymo spent months talking to lawmakers and groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
The permit comes under a new autonomous vehicle safety regime launched by Mayor Eric Adams in 2024. Waymo had to coordinate with first responders, submit a detailed testing and safety plan to the DOT, and secure state DMV permits.
Waymo will need to apply for an extension when the trial ends in late September.
