Grammarly just launched a new document-based interface powered by Coda, the startup it bought last year. The update brings a block-first design with tables, columns, lists, headers, and rich text blocks for alerts or tips.

An AI assistant lives in the sidebar. It can summarize text, answer questions, and offer writing suggestions.

New AI tools target students and pros:

  • Reader Reactions lets you pick a reader persona for tailored feedback
  • Grader rates work against teacher guidelines and public course material
  • Citation Finder tracks down and generates public citations
  • Paraphraser tweaks tone based on your input

Grammarly also added AI agents to detect plagiarism and AI-generated content.

AI detection tool

Luke Behnke, Grammarly’s VP of Enterprise Product, told TechCrunch the AI content detectors still have hiccups, but Grammarly claims it’s the most accurate on the market.

“The goal here is not to provide an enforcement mechanism for teachers. If teachers want to enforce policies, they should use our authorship tool. But this [AI detector tool] is about providing a window to students into what could be AI-generated text in their writing before they submit,” Luke Behnke said.

The update puts Grammarly in a tricky spot — offering tools to help students use AI while also detecting AI-written text. The company frames it as a “moral imperative” to prepare students for the future workforce.

Grammarly isn’t stopping here. After acquiring email client Superhuman last month, it plans to add even more AI agents in its products. The company raised $1 billion in May from General Catalyst to fuel acquisitions and ramp up sales and marketing.
