ChatGPT’s mobile app hits $2 billion in global consumer spending
ChatGPT’s iOS and Android app has raked in $2 billion since launching in May 2023, according to app intelligence firm Appfigures. That’s roughly 30 times the combined lifetime spending of rivals like Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
In 2025 alone, the app has already made $1.35 billion — a 673% jump from the $174 million earned during January-July 2024. Monthly revenue averages nearly $193 million, up from $25 million last year.
The closest competitor, xAI’s Grok, trails far behind with about $25.6 million this year and $3.6 million per month, just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly haul.
Appfigures points out this data tracks consumer spending via mobile app stores and doesn’t include revenue from web subscriptions or APIs. Still, it highlights ChatGPT’s dominance for paid AI assistants on mobile.
Grok didn’t have standalone iOS or Android apps at launch last November. It only rolled out its own iOS app in early January 2025 and hit Google Play on March 4.
ChatGPT’s lifetime revenue per download sits at $2.91, ahead of Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28. U.S. users spend even more, with $10 per download on average, accounting for 38% of ChatGPT’s total revenue. Germany is second with 5.3%.
The app has been installed an estimated 690 million times worldwide versus Grok’s 39.5 million, underscoring ChatGPT’s massive lead.
Monthly downloads are up 180%, now averaging 45 million globally, compared to 16 million in early 2024. So far in 2025, ChatGPT’s app has 318 million installs — nearly 3 times last year’s figure.
India leads in downloads, with 13.7% of lifetime installs, followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
