ChatGPT is on track to hit 700 million weekly active users this week, OpenAI confirms.
The app hit 500 million weekly users at the end of March, according to Nick Turley, OpenAI VP and head of the ChatGPT app. He said the app’s user base has grown 4x since last year.
Nick Turley posted on X:
“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI,”
The surge came after OpenAI rolled out an upgraded image generation feature powered by GPT-4 in March. Since then, more than 130 million users created over 700 million images in just a few days, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap shared in April.
ChatGPT’s paying business users jumped from 3 million in June to 5 million last week, Lightcap also revealed.
Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower reports ChatGPT users spend more than 12 days per month on the app—only behind Google and X. In H1 2025, daily average use hit 16 minutes per session.
The growth keeps accelerating fast for OpenAI’s flagship consumer app.
