Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI,” warned AI could develop its own language that humans won’t understand.
Right now, AI thinks in English. That lets developers track its reasoning. But Hinton says that’s changing.
He told the “One Decision” podcast on July 24:
“Now it gets more scary if they develop their own internal languages for talking to each other,”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they developed their own language for thinking, and we have no idea what they’re thinking,”
“Most experts suspect AI will become smarter than humans at some point, and it’s possible we won’t understand what it’s doing.”
Hinton called AI’s thoughts “terrible” and doubted the public fully grasps AI risks.
He said the only hope is figuring out how to “make them guaranteed benevolent.”
The warning comes as the White House pushes an AI Action Plan on July 23 that aims to limit AI funds to states with fewer regulations and accelerate AI data center development.
