Anthropic is close to raising $3 billion to $5 billion, Bloomberg reports, pushing its valuation to a massive $170 billion.

Iconiq Capital is leading this funding round. Talks are also underway with Qatar Investment Authority and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC, which could join as co-leads.

This would nearly triple Anthropic’s value since March, when it raised $3.5 billion at a $61.5 billion valuation. That round included Lightspeed Venture Partners, Bessemer, Cisco Investments, and Salesforce Ventures.

Despite its AI safety focus, Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei admitted in an internal memo that he’s “not thrilled” about taking cash from sovereign wealth funds tied to authoritarian governments. The company has little choice given the huge capital demands of AI development.

Dario Amodei stated:

“Unfortunately, I think ‘No bad person should ever benefit from our success’ is a pretty difficult principle to run a business on.”

Anthropic has yet to respond to requests for comment.
