Waymo is launching its robotaxi service in Dallas next year. The Alphabet-owned self-driving giant is teaming up with rental giant Avis Budget Group for this new rollout. Avis will manage the fleet of all-electric Jaguar I-Paces, handling charging, maintenance, and depot operations. Users will hail rides through the Waymo app.
This marks the first time Waymo has partnered with a rental car company for fleet management. Previously, Waymo worked with Uber in Austin and Atlanta, and Moove in Phoenix. Avis aims to help Waymo scale faster and more cost-effectively across new cities.
Waymo has already mapped Dallas with its sensor-equipped vehicles and begun public road testing with safety drivers onboard. Full driverless testing will come after further validation. Exact launch dates and fleet size remain under wraps, but the collaboration plans to grow to hundreds of vehicles over time.
Avis Budget Group CEO Brian Choi framed the partnership as a key step in the company’s shift from traditional rentals to broader mobility services.
“This partnership marks a pivotal milestone in its evolution, from a rental car company to a leading provider of fleet management, infrastructure and operations to the broader mobility ecosystem.”
— Brian Choi, Avis Budget Group CEO
Waymo currently runs commercial robotaxi services in Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco Bay Area. Expansion plans include Washington, D.C., Miami, and now Dallas.
The Dallas launch follows a steady push to broaden Waymo’s footprint through strategic partnerships and local testing. Stay tuned for more robotaxi deployments rolling out soon.
